MODULE DESCRIPTION

In the Archaeology module, students learn about the major archaeological sources, important research findings, key issues, and modern research methods in archaeology. Emphasis is placed on theoretical and practical approaches to interdisciplinary research between archaeology and the natural sciences. Students are introduced to the critical use of sources and the critical reading of archaeological and natural science (e.g., paleoecological) literature. The course focuses primarily on topics from the Mediterranean, the Balkans, and Central Europe. The main focus is on the individual research work of the students.

During the course of study, students will participate in international scientific meetings and write several scientific articles.

The following research topics will be covered:

  • Neolithicum and Eneolithicum in the northern Adriatic;
  • pile-dwelling settlements in the southeastern Alpine region;
  • interdisciplinary research of sites on wet soils;
  • romanization;
  • Roman settlements, towns and landscapes;
  • archaeology of the landscape;
  • Early Middle Ages;
  • digital archaeology;
  • archaeobotany;
  • archaeozoology;
  • palynological research (evolution of Pleistocene and Holocene vegetation and human impact on the environment in different archaeological periods).

The study programme consists of:

  • a series of lectures and seminars that deepen knowledge of archaeological topics, findings, and research methodology,
  • a series of special topics organised by lecturers on research topics related to the field of study.

Students will be involved in ongoing research.

MODULE RESEARCH PROFILE

The Archaeological module aims to provide knowledge of the most modern scientific methods developed in research programmes and projects on ZRC SAZU and in the National Museum of Slovenia.

The research focuses on the development of man and society in the earliest historical periods in the southeastern Alpine region. It includes a wide range of research activities, the implementation and testing of new methods and the development of scientific databases and services on the one hand, and the acquisition of new knowledge about settlement structures, economy, social processes and everyday life on the other.

All phases of research, i.e., field data collection, laboratory analyses, and data interpretation, are considered. Particular attention is paid to the natural science implementation (e.g. laboratory analyses), which always follows precise and clearly defined humanities research questions.
