Course syllabus

Prerequisits:

There are no specific prerequisites. However, prior knowledge of basic linguistic theories, general lexicology, and grammar is recommended.

Content (Syllabus outline)

The course covers and/or researches the following thematic fields (depending on specific study fields of individual students):

  • Etymology and comparative linguistics;
  • Theoretical foundations of systemic and interdisciplinary etymology;
  • Etymological dictionaries of the Slovene language;
  • Etymological dictionaries of other Slavic and European languages;
  • The interrelationship between dialectology, sociolinguistics, ethnology (i.e. the so-called intangible cultural heritage) and linguistic geography;
  • Methods in collecting the data of the spoken language, which is an integral part of the living heritage (i.e. different genres of dialect texts);
  • Methods in collecting technical terms pertaining to traditional occupations in Slovenia (questionnaire preparation, selection of informants, transcription, the relationship between the colloquial lexicon and technical language);
  • Preparation of linguistic/dialectal corpus as the primary source for dialect dictionaries and linguistic atlases;
  • Methods and procedures in dialect lexicography: synchronic and diachronic approach to linguistic analysis of dialect terminology in dictionary entries, the importance of the integration of illustrative dialect material in dictionary entries;
  • The importance of dialectological research (especially lexicographical) for linguistic classification, the understanding of socially (linguistic contact), spatially and temporally conditioned language development, diastratic and diatopic linguistic diversity, and the awareness of the relationship between the individual languages and their varieties.

Seminar classes

Seminar classes accompany the lectures and complement them by exploring individual chapters covered by the course syllabus. The main objective is to provide the opportunity for the student to conduct further research on any of the presented topics and/or accommodate it to his/her individual research interests (the seminar paper can also be a component part of the doctoral thesis).

Cross-curricular integration

The course content is tightly connected with good understanding of both the comparative method and the method of reconstruction, as well as the structure of the Slovene language on all linguistic levels and the historical development of Slovene from Proto-Slavic (or any of the older prestages) to contemporary language. The course is closely connected to a number of other disciplines, be it within linguistics or, more generally, humanities (e.g. ethnology, history, archaeology).

Objectives and competences

The student gains solid knowledge of the basic principles the methodology of etymological and dialectological lexicography, is able to interpret the information contained in various kinds of etymological and dialect dictionaries and/or dictionary entries as well as carry out independent dialectological research, transform the results into dictionary entries and comprehend the etymological argumentation behind the process. The student is capable of critical reading of the relevant scientific bibliographical apparatus. The course further equips the student to use and develop multiple methodological approaches to the analysis of dialect material and gives a clear idea of the tasks and avenues for further etymological and dialectological research of the national and/or any other language. The student is able to critically approach existing etymological analyses and carry out independent research in dialectology-based lexicography (also from the point of view of geolinguistics). He/she is equipped with the necessary critical apparatus to appreciate and assess the significance dialectological research has for language (in all its varieties) classification, temporally and spatially conditioned language development, diastratic and diatopic diversity, language stratification, and better comprehension of the relationship between a given language and its varieties.

Intended learning outcomes

The main course objective is to prepare and encourage the student to use and develop various methodologies in the linguistic analysis of dialect texts and present the task and possibilities in lexicographical (and geolinguistic) research of Slovene as well as other languages.

The student gets acquainted with the history of the etymological and dialectological approach in lexicography and the results and perspectives of project-conducted general, etymological and dialectological research of Slovene. Multiple methods of collecting and representing dialect material in specialised dialectological terminological dictionaries are presented, which equips the student with the necessary knowledge to be able embark on independent lexicographical work in dialectological research. A further important objective is to enable the student to develop a comprehension of register-based language stratification of the individual dialects and to be able to critically evaluate various types of lexicographical representation of (Slovene) dialects and their varieties, especially technical language, as well as appreciate the significance that etymological and dialectological lexicography has both for the understanding of temporally and spatially conditioned language development and the research of distratic and diatopic variety/stratification of languages.
