MODULE DESCRIPTION

The module offers theoretical and practical skills needed by present-day lexicologists, lexicographers, researchers, authors of textbooks or manuals and grammarians. Students acquire extensive knowledge ranging from history, the theoretical bases and didactics of lexicology, lexicography and grammar-writing to the state-of-the-art language technologies. According to their study interests, students can choose from several specialised subjects, which include lexicology, lexicography and grammar-writing of the contemporary language or of the language in a specific period of the past, the problems of normativity and of the influence of insights from sociolinguistics on the work of lexicologists, lexicographers and grammarians as well as lexicology and lexicography which deals with questions related to etymology, dialectology and geographical linguistics.

The module is so designed that it also combines well with other modules within this programme and outside the Postgraduate School of the Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts. We thus encourage students to choose subjects from the following modules, in accordance with their interests: Anthropology: understanding worldmaking practices (anthropological problems in lexicology, lexicography and grammar-writing); Transformation of Modern Thought (philosophical view of researching and describing language); Language as Social Practice in Shaping Ideology, Memory, and Identity (language in society and language as a speech of symbols); Slovenian Studies (lexicology, lexicography and grammar-writing of the Slovenian language); Cultural History (historical lexicology, lexicography and grammar-writing; the problems of the national and the multicultural in language); Millennia between the Adriatic and the Danube (etymology).

Students enrolled in other modules are encouraged to choose subjects from our module according to their interests.

MODULE RESEARCH PROFILE

The module is based on research activities of the Fran Ramovš Institute of the Slovenian Language. The majority of lecturers who participate in this module are occupied with lexicological questions and questions related to a variety of manuals. All lecturers are members of teams preparing new dictionaries, corpuses, web-based linguistic portals and other manuals. Among them are also authors of textbooks and didactic writers.
